If Time - if not - next day - Review of Question & Notes: Did the Renaissance lead to the French Revolution?
Notes:
1. The Renaissance (1300s–1600s)
-
Sparked a revival of humanism, art, science, and critical thinking.
-
Encouraged questioning of traditional authority (especially the Church).
-
Led to the Scientific Revolution (1600s) → people applying reason and evidence to understand the world.
2. The Enlightenment (1600s–1700s)
-
Grew out of Renaissance + Scientific Revolution.
-
Philosophers like Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu argued for freedom, equality, democracy, and separation of powers.
-
These ideas heavily inspired political change.
3. The French Revolution (1789)
-
The Enlightenment directly shaped revolutionary leaders and their goals.
-
The Renaissance was two steps back in the chain: it encouraged curiosity, questioning, and belief in human potential → which set the stage for Enlightenment thought → which directly inspired the Revolution.
In Summary: The Renaissance didn’t cause the French Revolution directly, but it was the first domino.
Renaissance → Scientific Revolution → Enlightenment → French Revolution.
