The Bill of Rights is the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1791.
Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
People can follow any religion (or none), speak freely, publish ideas, gather peacefully, and ask the government to fix problems.
Right to bear arms
People have the right to own and carry weapons.

No quartering of soldiers in private homes without consent
The government cannot force citizens to house soldiers.
Protection from unreasonable searches and seizures (need a warrant/probable cause)
Authorities need a good reason and usually a warrant to search or take property.
Rights of the accused: due process, no double jeopardy, no self-incrimination, right to fair compensation if property is taken
People accused of crimes must be treated fairly, cannot be forced to testify against themselves, and cannot be tried twice for the same crime (double jeopardy = once found not guilty, the government cannot put you on trial again for that same offense).
Right to a fair trial: speedy and public trial, impartial jury, right to lawyer, right to confront witnesses
Accused persons get a quick, open trial with a fair jury, legal help, and the chance to face witnesses against them.
Right to a jury trial in civil cases (over a certain value)In lawsuits about money or property, people can have a jury decide the case.
No excessive bail or fines; no cruel and unusual punishment
Courts cannot demand unfair bail or use harsh, inhumane punishments.
Rights not listed in the Constitution are still protected for the people
People keep other rights too, even if they are not written in the Constitution.
Powers not given to the federal government belong to the states or the people
Any power not given to the federal government is left to the states or to the people themselves.
